Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County is offering two spring trainings, one for those interested in becoming Hospice Patient Care Volunteers, and one for professional service providers (medical personnel, social workers, therapists, clergy) who wish to develop more skills and understanding about how to support those who are grieving.

Patient Care Volunteer training will be held Thursdays for nine weeks beginning April 14 and continuing through June 9. Bereavement Training for Professionals will run for six Wednesdays, April 20 - May 25. The Bereavement training also includes an optional two additional weeks for those who wish to become Bereavement Support Volunteers. The trainings will both meet from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County office in Ellsworth. The deadline for applications for the trainings is March 25. There is a fee for both trainings. The cost for Patient Care Volunteer training is $75, and the Bereavement Training for Professionals is $150. Limited scholarship assistance may be available.

Both of these trainings are comprehensive, providing education, skills-enhancement and personal and professional development. Each session focuses on a topic related to hospice, life-limiting illness, and grief-related issues. Communication skills, family dynamics under stress, spirituality in end-of-life and loss scenarios are some examples of topics to be included. Participants in previous trainings provide enthusiastic feedback on these offerings, finding it meaningful and something they would recommend to others.

From a recent trainee: "Many Thanks for this spring’s Hospice training program. I found each meeting to be informative, well-planned and worthwhile. I look forward to using my learning and hope I will be a successful Hospice volunteer!"

For more information about these training opportunities, call the HVHC office at 667-2531.
