Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County provides FREE medical equipment to residents of Hancock County. These items have been donated by individuals in the community who no longer have a need and want to help others.
Those who need equipment can keep the equipment for as long as they need it and can feel free to share with others who have a need. We only ask that when the item is no longer needed that it gets donated back to us, so we can help others.
In 2023 we had 311 visits to our office for those in need of equipment. We appreciate donations to keep this program going.
Hours
Equipment can be picked up or donated during our regular business hours, Monday-Friday, 9:00am-4:30pm. See our holiday schedule for days we are closed here. We are also closed on storm days when the Ellsworth Schools are closed.
When you come to our office, you will complete a form with your name, the name of the person it will go to and the town they live in. This is for tracking purposes only.
Equipment we may have includes:
- Wheelchairs / transport chairs
- Walkers of all types
- Canes and crutches
- Commodes
- Toilet safety rails
- Toilet seat extenders
- Shower chairs and bed tables
- Hoyer lifts (need to have all parts and slings)
- Gate belts
- Grabber / reacher tools
Supplies occasionally donated:
- Incontinence supplies and wearable ( NO tab) diapers – Packages need to be unopened
- Chucks (bed and chair wetness protection) – disposable and washable (Clean and unopened)
Equipment Matching Program
We are not able to take hospital beds or large motorized wheelchairs/scooters due to space and safety. However, we can match you with someone who has an item to donate. Contact us to be added to the list or if you have one of these items to donate.
Items we cannot accept include:
- Catheters and other supplies with tubing
- Diabetes and other testing supplies
- Syringes of any type
- Therapy wraps, supports, boots, casts, etc.
- Respiratory items/machines – CPAP, BIPAP, etc.
- Dialysis supplies
- Lotions or liquids including Boost, Ensure and other drinks (drinks can be donated to Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry in Ellsworth, ME).
- Any item with an expiration date
Donating medical equipment | Items
When donating items, we ask that equipment is:
- In good working order
- Clean
- Complete (no missing parts or pieces)
- Free of mold, rust, and any type of tape or tape residue.
- Completely assembled or if you are willing to assemble when you drop off.
Note: We do not clean, repair or order parts or batteries for donated items. If we can’t use it, we must pay to dispose of it.

Holding items:
We cannot hold items longer than 24 hours from the time of putting them on hold. We prefer that you stop by to explore what we have in stock and to find the right item and fit for you.
No Guarantees:
Where items are donated, we cannot guarantee that we will have what you need when you come in. Many items like walkers and canes are often available. We do our best to take in only equipment that appears to be in good condition, but we are not experts in this area. It will be important for you and/or your healthcare support team to inspect the item(s) to be sure they are functioning properly.
